Host an International Student

Looking for families willing to be stretched for an experience of a lifetime.

Advantages to hosting an International
  • Unique opportunity to share your home and family and impact someone else’s life and nation with Christ.
  • Learn about another culture
  • Share our American life and culture
  • Help the student practice his/her English
  • Share your families activities, events, holidays and special times
  • Develop a life-long friendship
  • Have an opportunity to share the importance of your Christian faith
Who Are We Looking For?
  • Two parent, Christian family that attends at least one church service and/or other church function each week.
  • Preference given to LCS families with high school students, then grade school students, friends of LCS (former student families, etc)

Note: Please understand that international students may not be professing Christians or have a strong church background. As such, LCS is looking for strong Christian homes to provide a positive Christian influence in the lives of these students. Students are expected to obey all “house” rules and all school rules regardless of their own personal beliefs.

What Responsibilities Does A Host Family Have?
  1. Be available to pick the student up at the airport, especially the first time.  Provide a bedroom with bed, dresser, and space for belongings. Provide a desk or study center that the student can call their own
  2. Provide all meals and snacks that the rest of the family enjoys. Send lunch to school with the student, or from the host family compensation, give the student the necessary money to purchase the prepared food of the day.
  3. Do the student’s laundry, unless the student prefers doing it him/herself.
  4. Transport the student to and from all required and extra curricular school activities, church, church functions the student is participating in, and to various stores so that the student can purchase any other clothing, school, and personal supplies.
  5. Be aware that the student has sufficient weather appropriate and dress code acceptable clothing. Some students may not bring much clothing and expect to purchase it here with their own money.
  6. Be available to chat with, encourage, and emotionally support the student. Remember, this may be their first time away from home. They may have times of loneliness, stress, or depression. Be aware of any changes in behavior that might indicate problems and call the IS Coordinator immediately.
  7. Include the student in your family activities – attendance at sporting events, LCS events, family gatherings, and special holiday gatherings. The students are here to learn English and experience American culture.
  8. Give the student “space.” Like anyone, there will be times that they will want to be left alone to think, read, or listen to music. If these times are too often or too long, this might indicate problems. Call for help.
  9. Do not allow your student to spend the night at another home unless the parents are present. This must be confirmed in person with the parents. If you have any questions or concerns about the stay, do not allow it, or ask the IS Coordinator to make a determination.
  10. Do not allow the international student to ride with any driver under the age of 21.
  11. LCS policy is that no international student will be allowed to drive in the United States even if they have an international driver’s license. This alleviates problems should there be an accident.
  12. As host “parents,” you have “care and custody” of someone else’s child. This is quite a responsibility. Think about the kind of care you would want someone else to give your child if they were living a home abroad and provide that same kind of physical and emotional care for your international student.
Will I Be Compensated To Host An International?
  • Host Families will be compensated with money paid to LCS by the student’s family. The host family will be paid monthly for ten months beginning about August 25th with the last payment on or about May 25th. This compensation is to cover your added expense in fulfilling your responsibilities as a host.
  • Host Families are not expected to pay for the International Student’s clothing, school supplies, personal supplies or medicines, or long distance phone calls. Students will have their own spending money to cover these items.
  • Please use Contact Us for specifics on the amount of the compensation.
