Q. Where do the students come from?

The students at Lima Christian come from a radius of about 20 miles (35 km) from Lima. Over 70 different Christian churches are represented in the student body.

Q. What subjects do the students take?

Students in the 9-12th grades have schedules that include both required classes and electives. Generally, a student will have 6 required classes, one or more electives and physical education. The typical 9-12th grade student takes English, Math, Social Studies, Spanish, Science, and Bible. In addition, students are required to take some Fine Arts credits, such as art, chorus, or band, Health for a ½ credit, and Physical Education. Other elective courses are available, some for college credit through Genesee Community College.

Q. How much homework will I have to do?

The amount of homework will vary depending on the class you are taking. Academic classes will usually have homework to do each day of class. Other classes, such as physical education and art will have project work that may not be due for several weeks. It is important to always do the homework on time as teachers often use homework as part of the course grade.

Q. What do teachers use to grade a student?

Teachers may use many different methods of evaluation of a student’s work. They may include homework, tests and quizzes, class participation, laboratory work (in science classes), projects, or other types of assignments. Teachers often use a combination of methods to fairly evaluate each student.

Q. What is a typical day at LCS like?

A typical day at LCS begins with homeroom at 8AM. Attendance is taken and morning announcements are given over the PA system. Students are assigned to a homeroom based on their grade level. The morning academic program is three blocks or periods of classes, a block called FLEX for students with labs or that are in chorus or band. Lunch follows. The afternoon schedule includes three academic blocks. School dismisses at 2:35 PM. The Friday schedule is different in that Chapel is immediately after homeroom. Because of Chapel, classes on Friday are a little shorter than on other days of the week.

Q. What do students have for lunch?

Because the school does not have cafeteria facilities, students must bring their lunch from home. A couple of days during the week, however, pizza or grilled cheese sandwiches prepared by the senior class are available for a small cost.

Q. What is chapel?

All students are required to attend Chapel. Chapel music worship is led by a group of students and is followed by speaker. Chapel is a time of inspiration for students and faculty.

Q. What extracurricular activities are offered?

LCS offers a variety of extracurricular activities including sports teams, drama, ski club, Yearbook Club, and several other types of activities. Sports available are soccer in the fall for boys and girls, volleyball in the fall for girls, basketball during the winter for boys and girls, golf in the spring, baseball for boys in the spring, and softball for girls in the spring. Practice sessions for sports teams are generally after school. Other extracurricular activities meet at various scheduled times during the day or after school.

Q. What special events take place during the school year?

The major student event during the year is Homecoming Week. The week starts off with Spirit Week. Each day during this week has a theme, such as “movie characters.” Students are allowed to dress us in some way along the theme of the day. It is always a lot of fun to see the costumes. On Friday of that week there are fun game competitions in the gym. On that evening, there is a home basketball game with several special activities planned during the game. and on Saturday evening is a special dress up banquet for the students.

Other events during the year include special performances by the chorus and band and an art show highlighting the works of the senior high art students.

Each school year we also have either a Science Fair or History Fair, depending on the year. Generally the upper elementary and junior high students participate in these fairs. The exhibits are set up for a couple of days in the gym for all of the students, families, grandparents, and school friends to see. Art work is also displayed during the fairs.

Students that participate in the competitive sports program have an awards program at the end of each sport’s season.

At the end of the school year, just before final exams, there is a high school picnic. The food is cooked outside on a grill by some of the students and teachers. After the picnic there are outside games such as baseball and soccer. This is always a great day of fun as school winds down.

Q. What do the students wear to school?

During the school day, students must abide by the Dress Code. For physical education classes the students are required to wear shorts and athletic shoes. About once a month LCS has a dress down day and students may wear nice jeans, but must abide by the dress code in all other ways. Students are allowed to wear casual clothes to athletic events held after school hours.

Q. What is it like in the Lima area?

Lima is a beautiful area located along Routes 5 and 20, a major highway that runs east-west across New York State. Lima is a semi-rural agricultural area where crops are grown including corn, wheat, soybeans, and vegetable crops such as sweet corn, green beans, peas, and cabbage. There are also a few dairy farms. Although a semi-rural area, Lima is also close to Rochester, NY. It only takes about 20 to 30 minutes to get to large shopping areas, cultural, and sporting events. The village of Lima has many houses, a few stores and businesses, a public elementary school, our school, a gas station, and several churches. The streets are quiet, the yards have trees, shrubs, and some flowers. The main streets are busier with some traffic. .

Q. What is the geography like in Lima?

The area around Lima and Rochester is gently rolling hills. These hills and the lakes were formed by the glaciers that crossed this area about 10,000 years ago.

Q. What do the students do for fun?

Because we are located close to Rochester there are many things that are fun and interesting to do. There are many movie theaters and malls for shopping. Often, students get together at someone’s house to talk, play games, or watch a movie at home. There is downhill and cross country skiing without driving too far. What students do for fun depends a lot on the interests of the students and their families.

Generally, summer weather is in the 80’s F during the day and in the 60’s F at night. In the autumn the temperatures begin to drop and the tree's leaves turn color. There may be days with temperatures in the 70’s F or in the 50’s F. During the winter the temperatures are colder and we may have snow. Temperatures average in the low 30’s F in the daytime and colder at night. Spring comes during March and April with more mild temperatures back up in the 50’s and 60’s F. Warm summer weather arrives usually in late May or early June.
